LTU or LuftTransport-Unternehmen is a German based airline. In English the initials stand for "air transport enterprise". Dusseldorf International Airport and Munich International Airport are its main hubs. Its operations include scheduled services on medium and long distance routes. They also operate charter services. LTU came into being on May 1955 as Lufttransport Union and started operating on October 20, 1955, in Frankfurt. It was given its present name in 1956 and since 1961 has been based in Dusseldorf. It has its headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany.

LTU is one of the safest airlines in the world. Lufthansa is one of its main competitors. Earlier LTU operated well frequented services from Dusseldorf to Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai, but these services have been stopped recently. In March 2007 Intro Verwaltungsgesellschaft owned 55% of the airline while Marbach Beteiligung und Consulting owned 45%. At present LTU has 2,892 employees working for it. Air Berlin took over LTU International in the later half of March 2007. With this, was established Europe's fourth largest airlines group in terms of traffic. The take-over resulted in the airlines carrying 22.1 million passengers in 2006. While retaining its name LTU will go for a complete change in its medium and long distance routes, which have a possibility of getting integrated into Air Berlin's European network.

The LTU average fleet age will turn 6 years old in November 2007.On the 20th of April LTU received its 12th long-haul jet, which is a Airbus A330-200 under a D-ALPI registration. The airline now plans to introduce a new livery. LTU will also be operating 4 Airbus A340-300 jets to cover all its international routes.
