The Bass Museum of Art was established in the year 1963 when Johanna Bass and John Bass gifted their artworks to be publicly displayed in Miami Beach. This museum was set up in the famous Collins Park in Miami Beach. It was Miami's first public building. Recently it has found a place in the National Register of Historic Places. The museum runs on private and public fund.
Recently the Bass Museum of Art underwent a renovation and a cafeteria, museum shop, theater and a wing have been added to it. The display area has also been increased.

The museum proudly displays art works of the period between 15th to the 20th century. The paintings of the Baroque and the Renaissance period are given special importance. The painting by Peter Paul Rubens named 'The Holy Family' and a 16th century work called 'The Tournament' are 2 of the most popular works on display here. The museum also treasures masterpieces by Flemish and Dutch artists like Frida Kahlo, Francois Marie Banier and Picasso. The Bass Museum of Art is one of the few places where you can see Haitian artworks. There are nearly 80 works by famous Haitian artists including the famous director Jonathan Demme. Presently the museum authorities are working on a art exhibition by Picasso, Herve di Rosa, Matisse and Calder.
Visiting hours of the Bass Museum of Art are as follows:
- Tuesday and Wednesday: 10 am to 5 pm
- Thursday: 10 am to 9 pm
- Friday and Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm
- Sunday: 11 am to 5 pm
Admission fees is $9 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free for children under the age of 6. Admission is also free for museum members. Parking is the only problem here as there is no spacious parking lot. However you can park your car in the metered parking spaces on the road. So a visit to the Bass Museum of Art is a must while on your trip to Miami.
